The Business Problem That Isn't Actually a Business Problem

This week on Your Traitor Within, I sat down with psychotherapist and business mentor Nikki Heyder for a conversation that I believe will resonate far beyond entrepreneurship.

Because what we discussed isn't really about business.

It's about the person behind the business.

One of the things I appreciated most about Nikki's perspective is that she doesn't focus solely on strategy. She focuses on the human being trying to implement the strategy.

As therapists, we know that insight alone is rarely enough. People often know exactly what they need to do. They have the blueprint. They have the plan. They have the information.

And yet they still find themselves stuck.

Why?

Because underneath the strategy is often a fear.

A fear of being seen.

A fear of failure.

A fear of judgment.

A fear of success.

A fear of receiving.

A fear of taking up space.

And all of those fears are often rooted in something much older.

Throughout our conversation, Nikki shares how her own people-pleasing, perfectionism, and hyper-independence developed as protective strategies in childhood. What began as survival mechanisms eventually followed her into adult relationships, business decisions, overworking, over-giving, undercharging, and ultimately the collapse of a business she had spent years building.

What I loved about this conversation is that Nikki speaks openly about failure—not as evidence that something is wrong with us, but as an invitation to understand ourselves more deeply.

She shares how compassion-focused therapy, parts work, and nervous system awareness helped her stop attacking the very parts of herself that were trying to protect her.

One of my favorite moments came when Nikki talked about the importance of curiosity.

Not judgment.

Not shame.

Curiosity.

What if instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?" we asked, "What is this part of me trying to protect?"

What if instead of criticizing ourselves for procrastinating, people-pleasing, overworking, or staying stuck, we became curious about why those strategies developed in the first place?

As Nikki reminds us, these patterns do not make us broken.

They make us human.

This episode is for entrepreneurs.

It's for perfectionists.

It's for people-pleasers.

It's for anyone who has ever known what they needed to do but couldn't seem to do it.

And it's for anyone who is ready to stop fighting themselves and start understanding themselves.
